The Lockdown Diary - DAY 16

Posted 8th April 2020 at 22:55 by Cormack
The NHS Coronavirus texter has clearly peaked, nothing again today.

Routine day of work and I've got a few off now so had a cosy day tying up a few loose ends and "straightening the pictures", had a read in the sun in the garden for an hour and a bit and had a sea bass curry for tea that was bang on, what a piece of fish that is, so it's been a good day.

I realise also that this week, harking back to my childhood and also a shop shelf about a mile away, that I had the opportunity to pick up a box of broken biscuits. Now I live in the town of a huge Jacob's and remember the 70s and 80s, especially when Crawford's were still going, that 5-4-3-2-1s, and in particular, Clubs, were a waste of supermarket shelf space because everyone had a source of cut price, imperfect versions where the biscuit was invariably 90% complete or occasionally, there was no biscuit, just chocolate (the lottery win of broken biscuits). The shop shelf sell 'misbix', which are again a bag of imperfects but are an absolute steal because when you open them, they're invariably knockdown Twixes.

So, the ideal box will be ripe with Bourbons (Mrs C and I), Dodgers (my son), something chocolate-coated (my daughter) and Garibaldis (me - loved the pastry-like biscuit, takes me right back, it's Proust's A la Récherche du Temps Perdu) and absolutely no custard creams (a biscuit for people who don't like biscuits). Well, swipe me if we didn't get the set with a few Fox Viennese as well. Yes, even the Garibaldis, which you never see on the shelves anywhere nowadays.

My lad loves biscuits and home made chips, his king treats, so this is a wonderful turn of events for him. He may have to get the bike out, though, as he's missing no end of footie and basketball and that's going to have an impact - there's only so much kicking around in the garden he can do. Daughter is a swimmer/gymnast and so has a trampoline and a mat she's using to good effect. The kids, meanwhile, are on sweet rations. Easter Sunday is going to change that, doubtlessly, but they're eating well, they'll have earned it.

Lego ship in a bottle over the weekend and choice of books and beer. I shouldn't go stir crazy, therefore - fingers crossed for a bit of sun and I love Good Friday for the fish and superstition.

Stay well
