The Lockdown Diary - DAY 13
Posted 6th April 2020 at 01:34 by Cormack
Late update again today, a bit like Saturday. NHS texter has been singing 'Wichita Lineman' all day so again, no text. A good day for kitchen graft and managed to bake a pan of brownies without the bloodhound kids not noticing.
Also, routine proper deep clean of the small deep fat fryer I have and use sparingly means the new oil is pristine, no debris, and is the facet of CHIP DAY! Essentially, it is only used for sporadic chips anyway and I'll sometimes have a last hurrah on the outgoing oil to do some fish in there before changing/deep clean. The next use we celebrate as a day where essentially we eat a heap of chips. Short of being locked in a Jammie Dodger factory, it's my son's idea of a favourite comfort-eating event. Why he's not a big load is part mystery, part activity but at the same time, he's now within an inch of my height and that's a growth that needs its fuel.
Small pleasures but mine own. The brownies were absolutely amazing, I serendipitously managed to produce a firm effort that went progessively gooey to a nicely set bottom. A miracle of physics and chemistry.
If you think I've gone a little bit overly in-depth there, there is a reason of sorts. To separate the weekend from the week and build a bit of other routine, I'm using baking - if there isn't a Lincoln, at least I could make a Lincoln biscuit. It works as well - you stave off the cabin fever with it and everyone enjoys the result. Mrs C has been a bit more settled these last two days - news from the hospital is static, which is a degree of stability, and she's had a chance to sit back and be looked after rather than be fretting over us as the forager. Yes, she has allocated herself the title 'forager' while I 'do the cooking'. That I gave her the title in the first place and run with it is immaterial - that's the nature of foraging - but she has done the job spectacularly well on her own without my carrying power and indeed I'm the shopper. Nice to see her wind down a bit. She just needs to put the phone down a bit - the news is not a healthy diet.
Anyone reading this, if you want the brownie recipe, just ask.
Stay well
