The Lockdown Diary - DAY 47

Posted 10th May 2020 at 00:21 by Cormack
Broke ranks today. Mum hasn't seen grandkids nor great-grandkids since lockdown through shielding on every piece of the equation. She's also in lockdown as she's 83, and she has solely my brother and the phone for company. Consequently, to at least do something about it, Mrs C would take the kids from door to door (5 miles) to have some outdoor socially-distanced contact. Given the premise of what we were going to do, Mrs C gave me a free pass to come with.

The last time I left the street was March. Everything has gone green, it is quite wonderful, even if it is behind glass. We stood around in the garden at suitable distances like an Oasis album cover and had a pleasant catch-up for maybe a half hour. Irresponsible? No. Had I not gone, every restriction was adhered to, and even when I did, I covered a total distance of around ten yards alfresco. There were sizeable clutches of people tottering about as if nothing was happening, whoch suggests a bit of lockdown fatigue. In terms of lockdown. though, I consider I've maintained my position as I offset all possible risk and we did our bit for Mum to see something other than the four walls. The rest of the world didn't get a look in.

The green is something to look forward to if I do get my release in June, though. Quite, quite splendid

End of first year at Uni, this. A lot of the video filmed in New Brighton (the Art Deco shelter at the start and finish distinctively so). Tragic how Colin Vearncombe died the way he did, especially in light of this song.

Brownies were decent - proper goo at the bottom (Creme Egg and Crunchie). Pleasantly quiet day with a bit of mental release as well, I fancy.

Stay well

I don't blame you C, you have to do what's best for you and manage your own risk.

My wife is now on the same twelve week business after being 'upgraded' from medium to high-risk in the latest round of letters a couple of weeks ago.

We had pretty much self-imposed that anyway, because I always thought she should be high-risk from the start, but she had been out a couple of times for a walk where there was next to no chance of coming into contact with anyone else.

Since the letter though, she hasn't been out of the house other than in the garden where she has begun her impersonation of Albert Speer.

I suspect the neighbours think of her as doing some sort of 'Captain Tom' though I do wonder what they think when I call to her from the kitchen 'wanna brew Herr Speer'?

At least she isn't doing the goosestep.

Yet.

Wait until she dresses you up as Czechoslovakia and invades you....

That's me done now. I didn't want to break ranks and I think shielding in some of the things I do, as you say, is overkill, but Mrs C is the ideal barometer as she's ultra-cautious, especially on my behalf (who would cook if he falls ill? Who? Who?). The first fortnight she was enforcing social distancing within the house, for example, including not handling each others' plates. She's hardly likely to risk us all.

Were the noises from Mum not so unusually cabin feverish (for her), I wouldn't have gone. Glad I did, and also glad I did it unannounced. That way I'm not a disappointment
