The Lockdown Diary - DAY 33

Posted 26th April 2020 at 06:17 by Cormack
The weekend as it is means brownies. No biscuits this week (Mrs C and daughter will be making a cookies packet mix for ease of collaboration) but my daughter was leading with an urgency which isn't usually there. However, this week she had put in to make Nutella brownies and was intrigued by the prospect. Came out as they should once again, subtle hazlenut in there and decent.

The other kitchen event was the field stripping of the deep fat fryer. Mundane as that sounds, it means two things - the outgoing oil can be used and abused for whatever takes your fancy and the refill means CHIP DAY! which is my son's wheelhouse. That will be Sunday, but the former, coupled with the proximity of Easter, means the rare cholesterol-laden magic for the kids of the deep-fried Creme Egg.

Yes, the deep-fried Creme Egg. My daughter stores her Oreo eggs for this as a rule and my son is a hound for Creme Eggs - I have been known to stockpile remaindered post-Easter packs for him so that I can dole him out the odd one in the height of summer. Thin batter to wet the surface, flour to attach and thin batter again. They were apparently awesome. Had some batter over so the very last hurrah for the oil was some home-made battered chicken strips. I can vouch for them as awesome.

To complete the Saturday kitchen work, it was another post-match pie, mash and gravy and Mrs C treated me to some coffee ice cream in today's forage which was as welcome as it was unexpected.

As you can see, a lot of Saturday is about the food... I also went into the shed and dug out the paddling pool, so if there's any expectation of the weather to break, now would be the time.

More Ska today.

Recommended listening - Prince Buster, Enjoy Yourself

Also covered a couple of Beatles tracks that offer them something different but aside from the Specials doing this as well, it was played at Mrs C's dad's funeral (her mum is a huge Specials fan but couldn't get hold of their version) and when it came on, his brother uttered the memorable phrase 'What the bloody hell is this?', which was a bit of levity in-keeping with the song and a bit of a lift for us all.

Stay well

Deep-fried Creme Eggs? It's not just Scotland that has heathens then?

It was one of those 'you know what they do in Scotland?' conversations when we got the fryer, ML. The kids just ran with it. Not my bag, I must admit (the battering started with potato scallops, that was me, child of the 70s) and Mrs C finds it infra dig but it's a rarity rather than the rule.
